Virtual book clubs are among the variety of events hosted by Lake Forest Library. Explore different books from the comfort of our apartments in Lake Forest, IL, and socialize online with other book lovers in the local area. The following are three of the virtual book clubs that have scheduled meetings in 2021:

True Story Book Group

One Wednesday each month, this group meets to discuss a gripping nonfiction book. In March, for instance, they’re planning to read Eve L. Ewing’s Ghosts in the Schoolyard, which explores what happened when the mayor of Chicago closed down various public schools in 2013 and local residents fought to keep the schools open. May’s selection is The Sun Is a Compass by Caroline Van Hemert, an ornithologist who traveled 4,000 miles through different wildernesses.

Cook With Books

This unique group picks a different cookbook each month and encourages you to make a recipe from it. Then, the evening of the meeting, you and the group’s other participants meet online to show off the dish, eat it, and talk about how it turned out and what you’ve discovered. In April, for example, they’ve picked The Good Book of Southern Baking by Kelly Fields and Kate Heddings, which includes pies, cobblers, cornbread, and custard among its recipes. The meetings are scheduled one Monday a month.

Afternoons With Judy Levin

At the start of 2020, the Chicago Tribune published an article on Judy Levin, who leads over two dozen book clubs in the Chicago area. An expert at in-depth book discussions, she has a group currently meeting virtually once a month through Lake Forest Library. One example of a book they’ve chosen is The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel, a novel that focuses on two events: a Ponzi scheme and a woman disappearing from a ship. Are these events related, and if so, how? Dive deeper into this book in February’s meeting.

For copies of the books, you can turn to Lake Forest Library, other libraries with curbside pickup services, or the Lake Forest Bookstore.
