The Lake County Forest Preserve District was created in 1958 and has since been recognized as a national leader in conservation, protecting over 31,000 acres of land for the community to enjoy year-round. With over 60 individual nature preserves across Lake County, residents can relish in the natural beauty of Lake Forest without having to stray too far away from our Apartment Homes at Kelmscott Park.
Oriole Grove Forest Preserve
Oriole Grove Forest Preserve is situated just west of our Lake Forest apartments and offers 1.35 miles of paths for hiking and cross-country skiing. The trail runs along the Skokie River, eventually crossing the Union Pacific Railroad and connecting with another preserve. Locally known as Jensen Woods, this woodland area features 220-year old giant burr and white oaks, a large pond, and two grassland sections with remnant and restored prairie. Oriole Grove is open daily from 6:30 A.M. to sunset.
Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve
Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve is a 10-minute drive from Kelmscott Park. This 4-mile trail was once part of a glacial lake, taking you through oak savanna and woodlands, wetland prairies, sedge meadows, and marshes. It’s one of the most important preserves for biodiversity in northeastern Illinois. Visitors have the opportunity to see rare and endangered plants and wildlife. Middlefork Savanna is open daily from 6:30 A.M. to sunset for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing.
Old School Forest Preserve
Last, but certainly not least, Old School Forest Preserve can be found just 15 minutes west of our apartments. Large oak woodlands and small prairies make up this 543-acre property, providing you with over 4 miles of trails for hiking, biking, in-line skating, and horseback riding. Additional features include a lake for fishing, picnic shelters, and a playground. During winter, visitors can utilize the area for sledding and cross-country skiing. Old School is open daily from 6:30 A.M. to sunset.
